Important Aspects to Consider Before Traveling to Turkey
1. Visas and Documents
To enter Turkey, Portuguese citizens need to have one of the following documents: a citizen card or a passport. Here’s a tip: you can only access the internet at Istanbul Airport with a passport, and even then, you only get 1 hour of free internet!
Portuguese citizens also do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
It is advisable to get travel insurance to prevent any unforeseen events. We always use IATI Insurance, and although we’ve never needed it, it always gives us extra security while traveling. Better safe than sorry!
2. Language
The official language is Turkish, although many people in tourist areas speak English. Knowing a few words in Turkish can be useful:
Merhaba (Hello)
Teşekkür ederim (Thank you)
Lütfen (Please)
3. Currency
The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). We recommend always having some cash with you for small expenses, although credit cards are increasingly accepted in tourist areas.
Whenever we travel, we use the Revolut Card; it’s safe, and we don’t pay exchange fees. If you want to join Revolut, it’s very easy and costs only €7.50. You may have to pay withdrawal fees at local banks, but this is unavoidable.
In Turkey, we found a bank without fees: HSBC. Look for these ATMs to save some money on withdrawal fees.
4. Culture
Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, so you should respect local religious practices and traditions. This includes avoiding public displays of affection and wearing appropriate clothing, especially when visiting mosques. Wearing long skirts and shirts is ideal, and having a scarf to cover your hair is also convenient.
5. When to visit
The best time to visit Turkey depends on your preferences and what you plan to do during the trip. However, the best time to go is between April and October.
There are some aspects to consider if you plan your stay for spring or autumn. On the one hand, it is an excellent time to visit cities like Istanbul and Ephesus, but you might not get good weather for beaches and hot air balloon rides.
Traveling in the summer months is great for enjoying the beaches and the sea, but it is peak season, so there are more tourists and prices for accommodation and flights are higher.
6. Safety
Turkey is generally safe for tourists, but like anywhere else, it’s important to be aware of your belongings and avoid unfamiliar areas at night.
Common Scams: There are a few common scams that tourists have experienced. One frequent scam involves shoe shiners who drop some of their work materials, hoping you will notice and call their attention. They then offer to clean your shoes but charge for the service afterward.
7. Mobile/Internet
Access to the internet is crucial in any country. Using Google Maps, making an urgent call, or hailing a taxi might be necessary in any situation.
For this, you have two solutions: getting an eSIM or buying a local data card. The solution we use most often and find the most practical for staying connected to the internet is buying an eSIM. On Airalo, you have several options for different days at very affordable prices. You just need a phone compatible with eSIM and to buy the card through the Airalo app. It’s very easy, quick, and intuitive.
The second option is to buy a local SIM card. Look for a company that offers packages that meet your needs.
8. Transport
Air Travel: The best way to get to Turkey is undoubtedly by plane. The main airports are Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB), and İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB).
Public Transport: Public transport in Turkey is generally very good. Major cities like Istanbul have efficient public transport networks, such as metro, buses, and even boats, at very affordable prices. Between cities, you can opt to travel by train or bus. Bus trips are the most economical way to travel, the services are very good, and many allow for overnight travel.
Taxis: Taxis are also common, but make sure the meter is on or negotiate the price before the trip begins.
Car Hire: Renting a car can be a good option if you plan to go on a road trip passing through various cities in Turkey. Major car rental companies like Hertz, Avis, and Europcar have branches in major cities and airports. Driving is generally safe, but traffic can be intense in large cities. Main roads are of good quality, but in rural areas, there may be less maintained roads.
9. Food
Turkish food is delicious and varied. Try local dishes like kebabs, mezes, and sweets like baklava. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to taste the famous Turkish coffee and tea, which are important cultural traditions. When visiting local markets, you can find a variety of spices and fresh ingredients.
Don’t forget that you should take some precautions with water and opt to consume only bottled water.
Planning your trip to Turkey well and being prepared for different situations can help you enjoy your visit to the fullest. With these tips in mind, you are ready to discover all the wonders this country has to offer and create unforgettable memories.Â
Safe travels!
